How it works

You do three things. We do the rest.

You already have a day job, and checking your own solar production shouldn't become a second one. Set OwlWatt up once and we'll watch it for you, so you won't need spreadsheets or math, or have to chase your installer for an answer.

Upload your contract

Send us the solar agreement you signed. We pull out every production guarantee, measurement period, degradation clause and exclusion, then explain in plain English what you agreed to.

Connect your system

Link the Enphase account you already have, or plug in OwlWatt Iris, our own hardware collector. Iris captures your per-panel data at 5-second resolution, and keeps going even when your installer's cloud is down.

We measure. You'll know.

Every day, OwlWatt compares your measured production to the pvlib PVWatts model. If your system falls short, you get an alert with the data behind it and a claim report you can send.

And if the number comes up short, you get the report.

A shortfall isn’t an alert you have to act on alone. OwlWatt generates a claim report that lays out, in one document:

The clauses from your own contract that set the guaranteed number
What your system produced over the measurement period
What the pvlib PVWatts model expected from it, with the parameters used
The arithmetic between the two, in kWh and in dollars at your rate

You download it and send it to your installer. OwlWatt never contacts your installer for you. The report is yours, and so is the decision about what to do with it. If it goes further than a conversation, a licensed attorney in your state can use the same document as evidence.

We read your inverter data directly and cross-check it against a physics-based expected-production model. Your installer's numbers become one input we test, instead of the answer you have to take on faith.

Shortfall documentation

When measured production falls below your guarantee, OwlWatt calculates the gap in kWh and dollars, then produces a claim report citing the exact contract clauses and model parameters.

Silent failure detection

With the optional OwlWatt Iris collector feeding it panel-level data, OwlWatt catches a microinverter that stops producing (even when it looks fine in aggregate) before months of lost energy add up.

Why it matters

Under a guarantee, a shortfall is money you’re owed.

People spend hours hunting for forgotten cash: old bank accounts, unclaimed property, a refund nobody cashed. Your solar contract has a number in it too. If your system produces less than that number, the difference is more than a higher bill you already swallowed. Under a production guarantee it’s a shortfall your installer committed to make good, and nobody is going to write to tell you about it.

Why now

Net billing changed the math on you.

If your credits shrank and nobody explained why, you’re not imagining it. Under the old 1:1 net metering, every kilowatt-hour you exported earned a full retail credit, so a system quietly producing under its guarantee still blended into your bill. Net billing (NEM 3.0 in California, and spreading to other states) cut what you’re paid for exported power, and your savings now hinge on how much your system produces. Why OwlWatt exists

I built this after my own installer couldn't answer a simple question.

I'm Olivier, OwlWatt's founder. I bought solar in 2024, and when the production looked off, my installer told me it was "within range" without ever naming the range. So I pulled my own Enphase data and modelled it myself with PVWatts, and it showed about an 11% shortfall for my system. I wrote a letter citing the model, the data, and the contract's production guarantee clause. My installer acknowledged the shortfall and scheduled a panel-by-panel inspection within two weeks.
